Isa has been an acting Supervisor for new Associates for the past three years.  Through Isa's leadership and expertise, The Heart Therapy Center Associate Program strives to provide each new Associate with the unique experience and practice to not only complete their practicum/intern portion of the program but also the confidence to move into a private practice of their own.

What Are the Requirements? 
Education
  • A Master's or Doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field with equivalent coursework from a regionally-accredited or COAMFTE-accredited program.

  • Completion of a practicum, which is supervised fieldwork experience, as part of your degree program.

    • This practicum typically includes a minimum of 150 hours of direct client contact. 

Associate registration

  • You must be registered as an AMFT with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to accrue post-degree supervised experience.

    • This involves submitting an application, transcripts, and a program certification form sealed by your school.

    • You cannot accrue post-degree supervised experience without this registration, except under the 90-day rule. 

Supervised experience

  • As an AMFT, you will need to accrue a total of 3,000 hours of supervised experience over a minimum of 104 weeks.

    • A minimum of 1,750 hours must be direct counseling experience.

    • A minimum of 500 hours must be in the diagnosis and treatment of couples, families, and children.

    • A maximum of 1,250 hours can be non-clinical experience, such as direct supervisor contact, administering tests, or writing reports.

    • You must receive regular supervision from a qualified supervisor who is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or Licensed Psychologist, among others. 

Pass the California law and ethics exam

  • You must pass the California Law and Ethics exam to maintain your AMFT registration and eventually qualify for licensure.

    • This exam must be taken annually until passed. 

Background check and fingerprints

  • Applicants must undergo a criminal background check and provide fingerprints via Live Scan in California
